Dispersal strategies and patterns in large carnivores
Dispersal is a key process affecting animal populations, including the genetic and demographic structure, as well as the evolutionary dynamics. Understanding the causes and patterns of dispersal is therefore crucial for population management and for predicting consequences of environmental changes on species distribution and persistence. In general, dispersing individuals of most mammal species are young and sex-biased dispersal is an almost ubiquitous feature. In this presentation, examples of large carnivores are used to illustrate patterns and possible causes of natal and sex-biased dispersal, including our own results about dispersal characteristics in the Baltic lynx population.

Teivi Laurimäe: Taxonomy of Echinococcus granulosus genotypes G6-G10: one species or two?
Echinococcus granulosus is a life-threatening tapeworm for both humans and livestock. Its wide genetic diversity and biological differences between different genotypes has provided grounds to consider some or perhaps even several of these as separate species. However, the species status of genotypes G6-G10 is still hotly debated: are there one or two species? I will provide an overview of this topic and our most recent data based on both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.
Teivi is a PhD student at the Chair of Mammalogy of the Department of Zoology, University of Tartu.
